A BRIEF HISTORY OF ROB

Rob Morgan Hill is a founding member and managing attorney of the Morgan Hill Law Firm.

Raised in New York, he moved to Olympia in 1987. He earned his B.A. in Journalism and Broadcasting at the State University of New York College at Buffalo in 1987 and completed his education at the University of Washington School of Law in 1992. Prior to entering private practice he worked in public information and as a budget and policy analyst under Governors Gardner and Lowry.

Rob’s practice focuses mostly in the family law arena, with emphasis on child custody and visitation disputes, including child relocations, as well as high asset divorces and committed intimate relationships. He works primarily in four Washington counties - Thurston, Mason, Lewis, and Grays Harbor - and has litigated cases before the Washington Court of Appeals Divisions I and II as well as the Washington Supreme Court. He has previously served on the Board of Directors of the Thurston County Bar Association, where he acted as the editor of the Association’s newsletter and proudly compiled the worst meeting attendance record of any Board Member in the organization’s history.

Rob says his practice style is a client-focused one.

“People often come to me saying that they have heard that I am an aggressive litigator,” he says, “and I have to clarify that. I am aggressive when the client’s objectives are best advanced by being aggressive. But in reality, the client’s interests are often advanced by negotiation and compromise, and sometimes even by charm and humor. The trick is to know my client, know my client’s goals, and to figure out how best to advance those goals.”

Rob now lives in beautiful Union, WA in Mason County and is the father of three amazing daughters and grandfather of two. He is a singer/guitarist and award winning songwriter, with many of his songs falling under the label tropical rock (“trop rock” for short), a genre that mixes beach-themed country/Americana music with reggae, Latin and/or pop music, appealing to fans of artists like Jimmy Buffett, Kenny Chesney and Zac Brown. His original songs are featured on multiple albums, including his 2017 solo album Beach Town, the 2009 album God, Love & Mexico, by Game Six, and the Brittany Kingery albums Dream in Blue (2014) and Edge of the Ocean (2013). The Brittany Kingery song “Tequila Talking,” co-written by Rob and featured on the Dream in Blue album, was named the Song of the Year at the 2015 Trop Rock Music Awards. And his single “High Side of Low Tide” from the upcoming album Love & Salt Water, was nominated Song of the Year for the 2025 Trop Rock Music Awards.

Rob was also an award winning humorist (Best Humor Column 1995, Washington Press Association), screenwriter (Finalist, Washington State Film Commission Screenplay Competition, 2000), and former standup comic who performed at Caroline’s on Broadway in New York City and The Comedy Store in West Hollywood. He and his partner Michele, a wildlife photographer, are founders and promoters of the Peace Love & Union Saltwater Songwriters Festival, sponsored in part by Morgan Hill.

“Ironically, I think that the skills and experience that I have telling stories in song and in doing standup, are at least as useful in my practice as three years of law school was,” Rob observes. “In law generally and family law especially, a good part of the task at hand is telling the client’s story. There are a lot of ways to tell a story, and the ability to tell it in a compelling and persuasive way is what makes or breaks a case, as much as anything.” And having performed comedy, Rob says, the ability to think on his feet and react to the unexpected comes in handy in the courtroom pretty often.
